Speakers of Southern Énxet, a minority language spoken in the Chaco region of Paraguay, can now listen to the Old Testament in their language.

In May, mission partner Tim Curtis and colleagues Asunción Rojas and Serafín Sosa travelled to Lima, Peru, to work with sound technicians from DAVAR Audio Bibles to record the final outstanding books of the Old Testament in the Southern Énxet language.

After three weeks’ intensive teamwork, the team had recorded Numbers, Deuteronomy, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel.

The recording of these books marks the completion of the Southern Énxet audio Bible.

When Oman* in Nepal started following Jesus, his parents threw him out of the family home. He has been ridiculed, shamed and threatened because of his faith. But rather than giving up, after training at a CMS partner college, he is making disciples and planting churches.

I’m from southern Nepal and grew up following another religion. My father and grandfathers all belonged to this religion. When my father and grandfather got sick, they prayed to their god, but he didn’t answer, and they lived in pain and suffering. As a teenager I asked them: If the god you worship can’t help us, is he really the true God?

When I was about 18, I met a church pastor, who shared the gospel with me and took me to his church. After going to church for a year, I saw someone delivered from an evil spirit and gave my life to Jesus.

Rejected but not forsaken

At home, I stopped observing our family’s religious rules. Tension built up gradually until one night, my family threw me out of the house. That night, I slept in a field and cried for several hours. I was heartbroken: it felt like the most terrible thing in the world that my parents would reject me. The next day, God spoke to me: “Your worldly parents may reject you but I will not forsake you.” Later, I reconciled with my family – they decided to let me live as a Christian and welcomed me home.

When I told people around me that I was following Jesus, they ridiculed me and called me a lunatic. But I knew that Jesus is the true God and those people would someday look for him. They were also struggling with evil spirits and the only one who could really help them was Jesus.

From apprentice to church planter

I left school and started working with my pastor as his apprentice. After a year and a half of making disciples alongside him, I realised I needed to grow and he suggested I get some training. He had in mind a three-month residential course at a longtime CMS partner training college to help me deepen my faith and become more effective in ministry. Incredibly, my family agreed I could go. [This course has been led by CMS partners. It helps people like Oman, first generation Christians in remote areas, to access training in leading churches without needing to leave home for several years.]

The training was intensive and practical. During those three months, I learned how to do ministry, preach the gospel, do things that I’m still doing now.

We had teaching on spiritual warfare, learning about our authority in Jesus. Nearly all the believers I look after now have been delivered from evil spirits, but before I had the training, I didn’t know about the weapons of spiritual warfare or how to fight.

The training also covered bitterness, hurt and unforgiveness. Around 90 per cent of the people I meet have a root of bitterness in their heart, and being able to bring this type of issue into the light and help people deal with it is very important.

One pastor also taught us about the Bible and preaching. I learned how to preach more powerfully than before through better preparation, grounding my teaching in God’s Word and structuring my sermons differently. Although I found it hard at the time, this is one of the most useful aspects of the training, as preaching is such a core part of my ministry.

When I came back from training, I started using my God-given authority over evil spirits, preaching in a different way and discipling people more effectively. After the course, I was able to start planting churches and doing ministry myself, not just with my pastor. My training gave me the tools I needed to plant three house churches in my area. One of these now meets in a church building on my family’s property – and a CMS partner came to support us as we inaugurated the church. Altogether, I look after 150 believers.

Refusing to give up

In Nepal, persecution is getting worse. For example, one day when I came out of a house church meeting, a crowd of about 300 people was blocking my way. They came with the intent of beating me, smearing me with ink – that is one of the worst punishments a person can get. They wanted to put me in jail. For 25 minutes they argued and questioned me about what I was doing there and why. They pushed me, they shoved me, they tore my clothes and threw my shoes away and they were preparing ink to smear on my face. At that moment, I felt completely alone, but God protected me. It felt like the story of Daniel in the lions’ den. I know that in the midst of persecution and suffering, God is with me.

Even so, I knew that if I went back to that village, people would probably try to break my bones. The danger is real. Recently I was invited to go to Kathmandu for a couple of months for a break, but I didn’t want my believers to think I was afraid or that I had forsaken them.

The Bible says that if you want to be a disciple, there’s a cost involved. Sometimes there might be doubt, but I recognise that God is there in the midst of these things. Jesus is alive. He will never give up. I also will not give up.

Finding enough leaders for churches and church groups is a challenge familiar in many parts of the world. Yet in the vast Diocese of Northern Argentina, with 187 churches among five people groups who speak different languages, equipping people willing to lead is another major hurdle.

A CMS-facilitated indigenous mission group identified training as a key priority for mission among indigenous peoples in Latin America, and CMS has been supporting the development of a new training centre in the Diocese of Northern Argentina.

The Centro de Formación Anglicano (CeFA) launched in March 2024 to offer leadership and ministry training for students from indigenous communities.

Alongside dealing with long distances to travel, students are learning in their second language (Spanish), are from oral storytelling cultures and have received varying levels of education prior to this course. Students travel to the centre in Ingeniero Juárez and stay for two to four weeks, before returning to their communities to see family and put learning into practice for one or two weeks.

In the first year nine men from the diocese completed the course – and in March 2025 a cohort of 13 women began studying together. Three of them shared with Paul Tester, CMS mission manager in Latin America, how they came to join the course.

“Why me?”

Etelvina is 26 and from the Toba community. Her family is Christian, her dad is a pastor and she has always participated in church. When she was 14, Etelvina started to take her faith more seriously and within a year was helping with church activities for women. She also started studying nursing in the city of Formosa, leaving her rural community when she was just 17.

In autumn 2024, Etelvina received an invitation from Daniel Lescano, the vicar general in the Diocese of Northern Argentina and a key leader at the CeFA. He asked if she would like to start another type of studying: the year-long CeFA course to learn more about the Bible and serving the church.

When she received the invitation, Etelvina had questions: Why her, not other young people? Was this God’s plan or just a human plan? She shared the invitation with her dad, who warned her that studying would not be easy. Etelvina took time to pray and reflect, and came away encouraged that this was God’s purpose.

Since her teens, Etelvina has learned to speak in public about the Word of God, which she found very hard. Etelvina is now a leader in her community, even though she doesn’t always feel confident.

Etelvina wants to know more to be able to help the church and says that this type of study is needed. She wants to use what she learns to help others – to be a spiritual nurse as well as a medical nurse.

A change of plans

Amandina, from the Wichí community of Barrio Collins in Potrillo, had originally planned to study computing, but missed the deadline to sign up. Then a friend told her about a different type of course that would equip Amandina in her role in the church.

Having lived with her grandparents after her mother died, Amandina was discipled by them as she grew up. As a teenager she helped in Sunday school, and she continues to serve there. Yet over the years Amandina’s church responsibilities have grown.

Now 28, Amandina’s community trust her and she has become a leader. Together with her aunt, Amandina is responsible for the AMARE women’s group and she helps lead the church.

Alongside former SAMS mission partner Chris Wallis, Amandina has become a tutor on the SEAN Abundant Life course on the foundations of the Christian life.

Although Amandina sees other people who she thinks are more capable than her, they don’t want to serve, whereas she does. She says she really wants to serve and that she loves God a lot.

So when Amandina’s friend told her about the course at the CeFA, Amandina mentioned the idea to Gladys Garate, an Argentine missionary based in Potrillo. Gladys and Amandina discussed the course with Daniel Lescano, and found out more about what was required.

Discovering that she would have to be able to speak good Spanish made Amandina a little scared, as her first language is Wichí – so for a couple of weeks she had some doubts. Yet she was encouraged by the trust of her community and the way that this opportunity seemed to fit with God’s purposes for her.

Amandina was very happy to be accepted onto the course, as she had thought since she was 16 that at some point in her late twenties she would be involved in sharing God’s Word with others – and now she is being equipped to do just that.

A dream of learning

Long before she received an invitation to study at the CeFA, Iliana, a 19-year-old woman from the Chorote community, dreamed that she was in a classroom in a house. She didn’t know where it was or how she had got there. Outside there were some young people playing; the door was open and she wanted to go and have fun. When the teacher turned his back she went out, but someone asked her, “Why are you out here? You are chosen.” The teacher came out and guided her back into the class.

Iliana didn’t know what this meant, but she kept having the same dream. She shared it with her family, including her father, who is part of the CMS-facilitated indigenous mission team. He suggested that maybe it was about her being trained.

Having always been in the church, in the last year Iliana has been more committed to following Jesus. She leads Sunday school, but other leaders had stepped back and she felt discouraged and alone. As she sat in her room one day she heard a voice say, “You are not alone.” Knowing that God was with her, Iliana decided to be a person of God, teaching the Word. Although she was sad because others were not helping, she felt joy because of God’s Spirit.

In her work with the children Iliana felt she was lacking what she needed. She had always wanted to be trained, yet something had been holding her back. Then Daniel Lescano visited her community and talked about training at the CeFA – Iliana was intrigued, and decided to find out more.

Now Iliana is studying and enjoys what she is learning. When she came to the centre, she found that the teacher from her dream looked very much like Pastor Narciso, the director of the CeFA and one of the teachers there!

Thanks to support from CMS, these women and others studying alongside them are part of the next generation of leaders in the church in northern Argentina – thank you for helping to equip them!

As a young adult, if you’d told Fiona Mayne she’d one day be a pioneer minister and planting a church on a new housing estate, she likely wouldn’t have believed you. But as she says, she started with a passion and energy to share Jesus and it’s been an amazing journey of possibility ever since.

“I’m not a Christian, so please don’t talk to me about God, okay?”

Fiona Mayne had been looking for a holiday venue for her and her children. Someone recommended a Christian-run hotel. When Fiona called to book, she made it clear she was an atheist. She was told she’d be very welcome.

As Fiona said during a recent podcast interview: “God wasn’t really on my radar.” She’d attended a Church of England school but not considered that Jesus was a real person to be known. An independent financial advisor and martial arts enthusiast, her main exposure to Christianity had been through a chance reading of The Heart of a Hooligan, the story of Dave Jeal, a football hooligan turned chaplain.

And yet, here she was, turning up at a Christian hotel in Sidmouth, where the people turned out to be very friendly. She found she enjoyed sharing meals with them.

And one night, in August 2012, she says she sat down to dinner an atheist and rose from the table a follower of Jesus. In her words, “Everything changed overnight.” Fiona felt like a new person and she was already beginning to sense a new calling.

Starting simple

As Fiona was making her unexpected journey to Jesus, close to where she lived in Weston-super-Mare a new town was coming into being with the establishment of a housing estate.

In 2014, Fiona, who’d begun attending church in Bristol and then more locally, kept finding herself drawn to this fledgling neighbourhood called Haywood Village. She spoke to her vicar about doing some outreach there. “We started off very simply with mulled wine and carols around a Christmas tree,” she recalls.

The place was still pretty much a building site, with few people and no streetlights. Eventually a school and pub were constructed. As people moved in, Fiona asked them what they might like to see in the area in terms of forming community. She was encouraged when they said they’d appreciate a space to gather and get to know each other. Fiona got permission from the school to set up a weekly pop-up cafe called Take Five – soon 100 people were coming for activities like Lego and crafts.

Fiona kept asking questions, such as, if there were to be a church here, what would you want it to look like? Kind of like this cafe, was the response. And that’s how Tea and Toast Church was born in 2017, as a regular cafe-style gathering where people could ask questions about faith.

Putting down roots

Fiona moved to Haywood Village in 2018 and began hosting a sizable Alpha course cohort in her home. As the course came to a close, the group said they wanted to keep meeting. So Fiona asked more questions: what would you like to do, that would be different to simply a social club?

“They said they wanted something mid-week, something where they could be a bit like the early Acts church, where they could come together in relationship, speak about their week, ask each other questions, read the Bible, pray. So, we started Rooted. They came up with the name and it was always over a meal. Initially it was at my house, but now it’s too big, so it’s in the school.”

Breaking new ground

These days Tea and Toast and Rooted continue to welcome a growing number of people: older, younger, families, people with special needs, Christians and non. Everyone stays together during the meeting times and people appreciate the informality and the ability to ask questions.

One woman started attending as she was caring for a disabled person who is part of the church. She ended up finding faith in Jesus and is now baptised.

As people become part of the community, Fiona says she’s noticed several people “cross the line” at some point and choose to follow Jesus.

Fiona is now an ordained pioneer minister in the Church of England, having trained “on the job” while studying at CMS. She said recently in an interview: “I’ve learned quite a lot along the way because I was at CMS… about the variety of different ways of doing church and being authentic.

“CMS is an outstanding place to learn and meet other like-minded people. As a pioneer I don’t think there is anywhere else I personally could even consider wanting to go.”

True to her pioneering spirit and job title, the next steps for Haywood Village Church are ground-breaking – literally. The church team have managed to secure a plot of land on which to build a more permanent meeting space, with rooms to let to other groups. In the meantime, the church are negotiating to use space in an empty shop unit to create a church and community hub. Fiona’s business background is coming in handy as she manages this project. She’s still committed to keeping the meeting-around-tables model even as the work scales upward.

What if God called you to a place where in 20 or 30 years you might see two or three people come to faith? If you knew this, would you still go? Mission partner M reflects on how to keep going in tough contexts.

My family and I live in North Africa, in an area where it is really hard to follow Jesus. Local people can’t be open about their faith.

Our aim is to be a blessing to the people around us here, particularly more remote communities in mountainous areas. We’ve been here for 10 years, living alongside local communities and sharing day-to-day life with them – experiencing the ups and the downs along the way.

My wife is training as a counsellor, to be better equipped to sit with women in these communities and help them to walk through the most difficult times. The local culture has quite a fatalistic approach, so people tend to take the view that if suffering comes you just have to live with it. However, for a lot of people who have been through really difficult loss and grief, or who have experienced traumatic things, they need help as they can’t just sit with that suffering.

If not us, then who?

Some aspects of our calling can be very challenging. We are quite isolated, and can’t share Jesus openly. Walking with our friends and neighbours through difficult times can mean carrying heavy burdens with them. Yet if we do not walk through this and show the light of Jesus, who will?

Following a call to mission in this context means learning to let go of a Western approach that is very results and productivity driven. That approach is to look for success in big growth and clear numbers. We simply don’t see that where we are.

Just stay faithful

Before living in our current area, I lived in West Africa, again in a place where mission was slow and hard. I had the immense privilege of spending time with an older missionary towards the end of his life. He had been thrown out of the country where he had served and longed to see people meet Jesus. He had stayed faithful to the call of God throughout his life. I have never forgotten his advice to me as I was beginning my mission journey in such contexts: “You just need to stay faithful to what God has asked you to do – don’t worry about the fruit, that’s up to him.”

In our work, we of course have times of wondering, “What are we doing with our lives?” In these times it can be tempting to think of giving up. However, then we come back to another question – who will stay if we go? Who will walk alongside our friends and neighbours? We don’t want to say that it all depends on us, but if the few of us who are following Jesus here leave because it’s too hard, who will remain?

Find refreshment

We have been learning how to manage too – finding Christian community with other foreigners here is really helpful. We have also learned that we need to take small breaks, to build in rest and refreshment, alongside debriefing with those supporting us. Knowing we have a network of faithful people prayerfully supporting us from afar is an encouragement. Over years working in this context, I have learned that one of my personal giftings is to keep going when things get tough – to put my head down and keep stepping forward. And I can do that literally too, hiking in the mountains close to where we live.

Walking with others

One of the ways God has been using me is also to walk alongside others, helping them to think through and discern God’s call. We are able to welcome young pioneers, people who are sensing God’s call to go and serve the Lord in tough places. We want to be able to come alongside them, to train and help them to fulfil God’s call on their lives. In that way we can seek to multiply the number of people being the light of Jesus in difficult places.

I’m able to walk with these groups in the mountains and be intentional about exploring the reality of this life. As we walk, I can listen, and I can talk, share stories and challenge people. A key question we often raise is, “What would you do if God called you, and you spent 20 or 30 years in a place to see two or three people come to the Lord in that time? If you knew that was what might happen, would you still do it?” Out of a team of eight to 10 people, maybe God will call one person to a place like this for the long term.

At the end of the day, as we consider the challenges for ourselves and with those who come to learn about our life, the question we come back to is: “What else do we live our lives for?” Jesus has called us to this work and we follow him. He never promised it would be easy, but we stay faithful, knowing the truth of his words in John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Mission partners Andy and Kati Walsh are sharing the gospel and discipling people living behind bars. God is powerfully at work, particularly in the men’s prisons, which are notorious for their rough conditions.

A simple course…

Andy and his small team, which is connected with the local Baptist church, have been running a 12-week discipleship course for inmates over the past couple of years.

The course, created by Prison Fellowship, focuses on understanding the gospel and how it can prepare inmates for life after release.

Over the 12 weeks, Andy and the team give space for inmates to explore the foundations of the Christian faith, ask questions and have open and honest discussions.

… big impact

Since they began running the course in 2023, they have seen huge numbers of men become Jesus-followers: 150 men were baptised in 2023, and 170 in 2024. They expect to see slightly fewer baptised in 2025, but the gospel continues to gain ground.

One man said, “This course showed and taught me about the true Christ… I learned about sin, but more importantly, about how to be redeemed by God. After this course, I can confidently affirm that I am a Christian!”

Another said, “It’s essential that this course spreads in the prison environment. The Word of God is our tool for teaching and freedom.”

Andy shares that he is deeply encouraged by what he sees in local prisons now: groups of 20+ men praising God, sharing the Word and pursuing Christ together.

But while many have chosen to follow Jesus, few of them have Bibles and even fewer have any consistent pastoral care.

For Andy, this brings to mind how Jesus was moved with compassion upon seeing the crowds, for they were like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36).

The next step: planting churches in prisons

Wanting to help inmates continue to grow in their faith and share it with others without the need of so much input from outside, Andy and the team’s focus is now shifting to planting churches in several of the prisons in the area.

But while the senior regional director overseeing the prisons has expressed support for the idea, planting a church in each prison is likely to be a slow process, as it will depend on the cooperation of individual prison governors.

Andy and the team will likely begin with a pilot – perhaps a small gathering in a prison courtyard.

Following a successful pilot, it is hoped that more prison governors will give their permission and that more permanent churches can start to take shape in several prisons, creating a nurturing environment for Christians who are still young in their faith.

“I saw soldiers shooting…I saw bombs falling…and dead bodies and wounded people in our streets. I had nightmares every night. I did not know why.”

“I lost my dad. He was killed during the war. The bomb fell on our home. I didn’t want to live. I don’t play because I have lost so much joy in this world….”

The words above are from two boys in Goma, DR Congo, both age 16. For their whole lives they have known near constant instability and bursts of violent conflict, the most recent of which unfolded in late January 2025 in the lead up to M23 rebels taking over the city.

Emergency efforts

Yet, thanks to the generosity of CMS supporters and the remarkable efforts of CMS-Africa and other key partners, these two boys, along with more than 150 other children, have begun to receive the trauma support they need to cope with terrible things they have endured in their young lives.

Altogether, thanks to everyone who responded to CMS’s emergency appeal for Goma, more than 10,000 people in Goma have received emergency assistance in the aftermath of the recent crisis. This came in the form of financial help, food and hygiene supplies and trauma counselling for people experiencing psychological distress.

Currently, in an area where more than two million people live and have experienced immense violence, there are only a handful of mental health professionals, so often people suffer their struggles alone, with many turning to substances, suicide or violence themselves. CMS-Africa has partnered with local mental health charity Kivu Care and the Anglican Diocese of Goma (led by mission partner Bishop Martin Gordon) to multiply the number of people who can provide trauma support.

This is making a difference. One boy, age 15 said, “I learned about forgiveness. When we don’t forgive, we carry the person who hurts us everywhere we go.” Another said, “I liked how Kivu Care people listened to me.”

Faithful witnesses

In a time of crisis, Christians have played a vital role in caring for their community, physically and spiritually. As our partner CIMR (Centre for Intercultural Missions and Research) aided in emergency relief distribution they also shared words of comfort from the Bible, such as Psalm 46:2, which says, “God is our strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”

The situation in Goma remains critical, with a rise in gender-based violence, electricity and water shortages and insufficient medical care available. CMS partners will continue to focus on helping people and communities to rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience for the long-term.

Karobia Njogu of CMS-Africa commented, “Despite the ongoing challenges, this initiative demonstrated the power of coordinated faith-based humanitarian action. The efforts generated relief but also laid a foundation for the restoration of dignity, healing and community rebuilding in a city shattered by violence.”

Here in Bangkok, Thailand, we have some great opportunities to serve families. Our local setting is the wonderful Khlong Toei slum community where our family has lived for 10 years.

With the help of Thai case workers and a local church, we run a Keeping Families Together (KFT) programme to support and equip overwhelmed adults to improve the lives of children in their care.

The current cohort of families are smashing their goals in areas such as budgeting, positive parenting and healthy living. The family fun days and training sessions are great, with weekly home visits allowing us to go deeper in applying family strengthening principles. We are super grateful to journey with these families who have so much to teach us about resilience.

Aunty Song was in crisis when a community leader nominated her for the KFT programme. She had recently taken on the care of her niece, Manao, alongside her own children, providing refuge from an abusive home in a different province. There was a clear bond between them and a desire to make the situation work, but nobody had counted on Aunty Song losing her cleaning job and falling behind on rent. With no qualifications and no savings, an extra mouth to feed and school costs for the new term now seemed an impossible burden.

Aunty Song’s first thought was to approach a big foundation in the slum community, known for its resources. She had to swallow her pride but she was determined to provide for Manao and shield her from worry. “She’ll be better off with us,” said the officer. “She can go to one of our residential schools outside Bangkok and eat three meals a day. Think of the education she’ll get and the opportunities… just sign here.”

It was so matter of fact. Aunty Song felt shame turning down this offer. It was “help” but not the help she wanted or needed. She knew family ties were the one thing Manao had and should be protected at all costs.

Now, approaching completion of the 18-month KFT programme, Aunty Song’s laundry business is thriving and Manao is settled in a local school. They have a new puppy and there is plenty of laughter in their little home. They are exploring faith in a small house church that meets on Fridays. Though their problems haven’t disappeared and slum life is far from easy, they are well connected and equipped for future crises.

Speaking about her experience in the programme, Aunty Song said: “The money [a small income generation grant] gave us a boost, but mostly the KFT team helped me to find strength in myself and my community that I didn’t know was there.”

Poverty is the biggest factor for placing children in institutions worldwide. In Thailand there are over 120,000 children in orphanages and it is estimated that 90 per cent of them have living parents. There are active orphanage recruiters in some areas, with overseas funding of unregistered orphanages reliant on keeping numbers high. Adults in situations like Aunty Song are finding they have little choice but to hand over the care of their children to “experts”. The risks of attachment disorders, developmental delay and abuse in these settings are not widely acknowledged.

We believe that God places children in families; all children deserve families and institutionalised care should be a last resort. Families should be empowered to care for their own children. Poverty is complex and multifaceted but it should never be the deciding factor in separating a child from their family.

The KFT project enables our team to get alongside a handful of vulnerable families in Khlong Toei and see the balance of power shifted at grassroots level. Making a difference for a few always has value, but systemic change is needed to redirect resources from institutions to strengthening families.

Jon works with the government pressure group Alternative Care Thailand (ACT) to advocate for reform in the Thai care system. Among other things, ACT is partnering with the government on a pilot project to safely rehome and reintegrate children from a large orphanage. It is slow work but results are promising. One teenager returning to his village after a decade in care said, “If you had helped our parents initially, we could have stayed with them instead of growing up in an orphanage.”

Seeing children become aware of their rights is what fires our determination to work for justice and demonstrate God’s deep care for the disempowered.

We are so thankful for your prayers and support enabling us to be present and engaged here. Change is possible and there are many signs of God’s kingdom coming. May you be encouraged to champion the needs of marginalised people in your setting and be blessed in walking alongside those others may overlook.
