Caroline and Dick Seed are based in Cape Town, and train and resource theological educators both in person and online. Caroline and Dick ask for prayer as they co-teach a PG Dip module on learning and teaching this week and next.

Pray for two students in northern Nigeria, who are doing their best to study despite a constant danger of attack.

Pray for both Caroline and Dick to be on top of the prep for the course, and for good learning opportunities for all.

Please also lift up background stressors: pray for them to find someone who can fix their car, for quick healing for Dick, who recently injured his foot, and for quick resolution of problems with a partner organisation.

We give thanks with Caroline and Dick Seed for the online Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Theological Education, which is starting this month with 13 students from across Africa and one from Chile. Pray for Dick as he teaches the first course to students online from 9–21 February. Pray for good learning and spirituality, for the students to get to know each other despite not being in the same room together and for good internet and reliable electricity.

Mission partners in different areas of Africa report that teaching terms are coming to a close.

In Uganda, Sarah and Simon Cawdell give thanks for training for lay readers trained this term at Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College in Gulu, Uganda.

Pray for these leaders as they return to their churches equipped with more biblical knowledge, further training in taking services, and some training in mission, church planting, discipleship and other necessities of church life.

Meanwhile Caroline and Dick Seed, mission partners training Bible teachers in theological institutions based at George Whitefield College in South Africa, report that term is coming to a close for their students.

Pray for the students as they return to their families and home churches across the continent to worship and serve, and pray for a good time of rest and reflection for lecturers.

More about our work

We provide training for Bible teachers in theological institutions and help resource people in church and seminary for contextual mission.

Drawing on our experience working among Muslims, we provide support for those ministering in Muslim contexts. We also work with an international programme that helps authors write Bible commentaries designed for people from a Muslim background as they delve into the truths of the gospel.

We support Bible teachers in key theological institutions, enabling them to teach the next generation of pastors and teachers in a way that is effective, contextual and relevant. Based at George Whitefield College, Cape Town, we do a combination of in-person and online training. While our main focus is Bible teachers across Africa, through various partnerships we also connect with and offer training for lecturers and teachers of theology all around the world.

Dick leads the Theological Education Development Services (TEDS) at George Whitefield College. He specialises in theology and culture, teaching and learning and curriculum development. Caroline is a facilitator for TEDS and specialises in mentoring authors who are writing Bible commentaries from Muslim contexts, postgraduate research and academic administration.

Our story

We set up Theological Education Development Services (TEDS) in Kenya to train lecturers and provide consultation for theological institutions in Africa. When requests for training exceeded capacity, we formed a partnership with Overseas Council Australia (OCA) to work with the Africa Mile Deep Strategy from a base at George Whitefield College (GWC) in South Africa. This strategy aims to deepen capacity for theological education across Africa.

During lockdown, the basic certificate programme went online and expanded greatly. It soon became obvious that theological institutions were looking for higher-level accredited professional training. We are now working with GWC to develop an online postgraduate diploma in higher theological education for lecturers in Africa and beyond.

Dick was ordained in South Africa in 1981 and was involved in church planting, ministry and lay and pastoral training in southern Africa, the UK and Germany until 1999. After his initial theological training, he completed a master’s degree in theological education and a PhD in mission and theological education. Since joining CMS in 2000 he has taught theology, run a theological college, trained lecturers and consulted for Christian higher education in Africa and beyond.

Caroline originally trained as a language teacher but diversified into theology, doing an MA in mission studies in 2001, an MTh in 2009 and a PhD in 2015. She has taught theology and languages in five sub-Saharan colleges and universities and has had administration roles in several of them. She also supervises doctoral students for a South African university and leads a team who are writing a contextual commentary (for people from Muslim Backgrounds of East Africa).

Church Mission Society has a rich heritage of evangelism, church planting and theological education across the continent of Africa. We are privileged to be building on that foundation to further equip the church for the task of mission.
