Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed, could you tell me more about your calling to work on an island?

The call wasn’t a single moment, but a growing “burden of love”. While serving on the mainland in my home town, reaching out to the Masai people in a remote area in a bush village, my wife and I felt a persistent pull toward the unreached coastal communities. We spent months in prayer with our local church, and the more we looked at the spiritual and social needs of the island, the more we realised we couldn’t just visit; we had to move our lives there to truly be a “faithful presence”.

I think it is right to say your work is in education and skills. I understand, for example, that you help people to make shoes and support themselves through workshops. Please could do tell us about the friendships formed and your achievements?

The real achievement isn’t just a finished pair of shoes; it’s the dignity in a student’s eyes when they realise they can provide for their own family. These workshops create a “neutral ground” where barriers drop. I’ve found that when you sit together over a sewing machine, you aren’t strangers anymore – you are friends sharing life’s struggles. Those friendships have become the bedrock of everything we do.

And now you have developed this work and have started a foundation. Could you tell us more?

We are now in the process of registering the foundation and it has not been launched yet. By moving from an informal mission to a registered foundation, we will gain “institutional trust” with the government. This will allow us to own property, hire staff legally and show the community that we aren’t just passing through – we are committed to the long-term flourishing of the island.

What exciting fruits have come from this venture?

The most encouraging “fruit” is seeing local people take ownership of their new life in Christ through faith. For example, seeing a leader from a local village choose to follow this path and then open his home for others to learn is incredible. Also, seeing our local young student from this island finish his studies to come back and lead is a huge milestone for us. It means the work is becoming truly indigenous.

That’s wonderful, people coming back to lead. Please do tell us other ways that your work is indigenous?

I do this by looking at our ‘local ways of doing things’ and asking how we can mature them into lasting spiritual and operational health. Through the CMS training, I am learning to move beyond just ‘pioneering’ into a season of rebuilding and reform. By establishing the new foundation, we are creating professional management structures that don’t stifle the Spirit, but rather provide a strong ‘trellis’ for the vine of our local community to grow on sustainably.

That is great. How can we pray for you?

You can pray for us:

For the homecoming:

Pray for our local Muslim background believer, a disciple who went to theological studies in mainland, returned from Bible school in Dar es salaam; that he would integrate well and lead with wisdom as he joins our team full-time.

For the foundation and future island empowerment centre:

Pray for the final registration steps of the foundation. Once this is complete, it will allow us to legally own the land for our permanent Community Empowerment Centre – a huge step for our sustainability.

For protection and provision:

For continued favour with our neighbours and peace in our community. Specifically, pray for our family as we parent our young children in this context, and for provision regarding their school fees for the coming term.

HH: It’s been a privilege to meet you Shirley, and thank you for agreeing to be interviewed today. You’ve done so much! Yet, you remain a humble and godly woman. Firstly, could you tell me what drew you to CMS Pioneer Mission Training?

SP: A friend told me about CMS, and I started researching the courses available. I had previously completed some Christian studies, but I chose the Undergraduate Certificate in African Christianity to gain a deeper understanding of African history, culture, and Christianity, including the theological aspects. This is particularly relevant to the communities I serve through my projects. The modules on Mission and Evangelism, Introduction to Black Theology, and Global Pentecostalism are especially useful, as they will equip me to apply what I learn directly into practice in my pioneering work, including international mission projects in Uganda and prison ministry in the UK.

Can you tell us more about your work as a pastor and apostle?

I served as a pastor for 17 years and now serve as an Apostle at True Vine International Ministries (formerly True Vine Church). My current focus is pioneering ministry, which includes prison outreach, international mission work in Uganda, and supporting orphanage care projects.

I also mentor teachers and leaders in Uganda to support sustainable community development.

For example, one individual I’ve mentored for the past five years joined our church online during lockdown. Together, we developed a five-year plan to explore his goals and dreams. He’s an agricultural teacher and has since built the STEAM the Light ecosystem in Uganda, which launched on Ugandan TV in December. His project raises public awareness about using natural resources, recycling and sharing sustainable practices within the community, including:

Nature-based farming

Authentic education

Entrepreneurship and cottage industries

Ecosystem restoration and conservation. The STEAM the Light website is available for anyone interested in learning more or supporting the project.

I’m very proud of all his achievements.

Another leader I’ve supported is Ibrahim, who runs JIREH Children’s Ministry, caring for 30 children in an orphanage. Our ministry provides donations to cover medical care, school supplies, and food. Recently, we assisted with transportation costs for food donations sent by William’s organisation, connecting both leaders to strengthen community support.

Can you tell us more about your broader work and mentoring?

I also work as a health and lifestyle coach, though I’ve paused much of this work, initially due to health issues in the past but more recently to focus on my studies and prison ministry. Through Joseph Prison Ministry, we offer meet-and-greet services for prisoners on release, alongside mentoring and practical support. One ex-offender reached out after discovering us on social media and joined our team as a volunteer. He has shared his personal story and testimony in a recent podcast to encourage other prisoners transitioning out of prison. I was also interviewed on UCB2 radio last year, sharing my story and why I started the ministry project – links are available for anyone who wants to learn more.

Across all these initiatives, my focus is on leadership, teaching, and practical support. I aim to help individuals recognise their God-given gifts, providing tools and encouragement to make positive changes and apply what they learn to their own lives. I’m very proud of these achievements.

Can you share more about your speaking work?

I am an international speaker, often invited to both secular and Christian settings to share on topics including health, self-care, and mental well-being, drawing on biblical insight to guide others in caring for their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

I also speak to young people considering starting their own businesses and becoming entrepreneurs. In 2020, during lockdown, I was invited as a guest on BBC Radio Suffolk to share my experience of starting a business later in life and provide practical advice for navigating transitions and adapting to change. I have also been invited by a radio presenter to speak on their show as a health expert.

More recently, I have paused some of this work to focus on my studies, family, and prison ministry.

In addition to speaking, my ministry responsibilities include:

Visionary and pioneering: leading mission and ministry projects, including prison ministry and outreach initiatives to bring transformation and advance the kingdom of God.

Life coaching and mentorship: supporting individuals in personal goals, career planning, and strategic thinking (e.g. helping a mentee plan NGO objectives for one, five and 10 years).

Intercessory work: praying for leaders, the community, and strategic influence to bring positive change.

Authority and leadership roles: collaborating with local churches across Ipswich and Suffolk to support pioneering ministry work and community engagement, ensuring alignment with God’s purpose.

Phew, Shirley, that sounds like a lot! How do you make yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually available for all this?

I take regular time to be still in God’s presence, allowing him to guide me. In those moments, I rest, recharge, and reflect, listening to his direction for each season of life. I follow his pattern to how I work. This helps me stay balanced and focused despite a busy schedule.

How have you found CMS Pioneer Mission Training course so far?

I’m really enjoying it. Visiting CMS headquarters last year and meeting you, Helen, some of the lecturers, and fellow students was a highlight. I love the African Christianity modules because they enable me to explore cultures through theological perspectives. The course allows me to apply the teaching directly to my context and reflect on my journey, connecting where I started with where I am now.

How can we pray for you?

I’ve faced a few health challenges and would appreciate prayers for strength and good health so I can complete the course successfully. I would also be grateful for prayers for my family, especially my mother, who has been unwell recently.

HH: Pam, what led you to study with us?

PD: I have always been interested in missions locally, geographically, and internationally. Having worked in ministry in different contexts, I began to appreciate doing mission in a variety of settings. I believe this enhances our understanding about the complexities and diversification of social stratification, cultural identity, race and ethnicity, ageism and gender.

I have done missions in Uganda working with church leaders and churches, South Africa, Benin, the Caribbean.

My life has been enriched by the vastness and the omnipotent power of God and prayer in the lives of people, and their hunger for the gospel of Christ in these nations.

I came across the course by sheer coincidence. I came across the advert and when I saw that it was specifically focused on African theology, I became excited and interested in finding out more about the contributions that my ancestors have made to Christianity. This developed within me a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to explore the MA course with a focus on African Christianity. I have studied theology previously but have never been able to explore in depth the significant wisdom, knowledge and contributions that my forefathers and mothers have made to Christianity, but at the same time have been denied visibility and recognition. As Christians, we all have a responsibility to share the gospel and to unearth the truth.

You have a particular interest in African Christianity and other African religions, can you tell us more?

I have studied theology and learned about different religions. I find it beneficial and enriching to work ecumenically and by doing so, we can learn so much from each other, develop respect for each other’s faith and thus develop good relationships based upon trust and love. As a Christian, I should be proud and courageous to tell the world about my faith. In the same way, my colleagues from other religions should be given the opportunity to share their faith.

One of the things that we don’t do well, is to listen attentively to people. We are far too busy, and can become very judgmental and condemning when someone does not meet our expectations, or share the same values or ideas.

I believe that one of the ways of building community and relationships is to listen to others, and give those who are marginalised the opportunity to be heard. Jesus is a good example of someone who listened attentively to those who were outcasts, marginalised and ostracised in society. If we follow his model when relating to people, we cannot go wrong.

My interest in African Christianity started several years ago – 20-plus years. I was involved in Black History Month projects and activities, and the Black theology forum at the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham. More latterly my interest has deepened in proclaiming the gospel in Spirit and in truth.

Many Christians believe that Christianity is ‘a White man’s religion’, and missionaries from around the world took Christianity to Africa and the Caribbean to edify the people and to bring civilisation to the nations. However, this is so misleading and untrue. Although I hold a PhD in Divinity, I am just beginning to learn that Africa is at the root of Christianity. It’s as though the blindfolds have been removed from my eyes. Personally, I think the truth has to be uncovered, and through the process of transparency our lives would be transformed and our faith would be rooted and grounded in Christ. I believe this course has the propensity of enabling and empowering learners and decolonising their minds. In my view the decolonisation of our minds is profoundly powerful, but it is a gradual process. We have a long way to go, but it is important that we start now than later.

We’re only in the first term, but how are things going so far?

I wish I had started this course several years ago. It is not only inspiring, challenging, informative, but it enables you to develop a greater enthusiasm to learn new things, to be more appreciative of the knowledge, wisdom and resources that God has richly blessed us with.

I have learned a vast amount about African theology through the reading of Thomas Oden’s book, How Africa Transformed Christianity [also widely known as How Africa Shaped the Christian Mind]. I learned that Africa has profoundly transformed Christianity through the vital contributions of African forefathers and mothers historically through the development of doctrines and spiritual practices.

It is interesting to learn that key figures and arguably the most significant individuals in early Christian theology were North African: Athanasius, Origen and Clement, Augustine of Hippo, Tertullian…to name a few. This is such an amazing discovery for all students to learn about.

The course is demanding and requires a great deal of commitment, continuity and perseverance. I like the idea of supervision and one-to-one contact with personal tutors, as well as having an assigned chaplain to the course. It offers good pastoral care and practice.

I also like the opportunity to worship together and to fellowship on Zoom and off when appropriate.

It is also great to see the diversity of students from a variety of backgrounds and nations represented. I would like to see an increased representation from the Caribbean islands and there is a growing need for missionary work in the islands.

I’m glad things are going well for you so far. I understand you are retired; can you tell us about your work before retirement?

I see myself as semi-retired. Presently I work as an Assistant Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Oxford. It’s a very rewarding area of ministry to journey and support ordinands throughout their vocation to ordained ministry. It is a huge privilege to see God working so magnificently in the lives of his chosen vessels, and their willingness to serve him wholeheartedly.

I also officiate as a priest at services in the diocese.

People say that I have a servant heart and a gift for prayer and intercession.

I guess that is true and I believe that I inherited those gifts from my late mother who served the Lord tirelessly. She was a staunch Anglican and a fiery intercessor. She loved the Lord and had a gift of sharing her Christian faith with the homeless. It is true to say that I have internalised some of her relational tactics when reaching out to the marginalised members of society.

You said in your application that you were interested in outreach to the marginalised, eg, homeless, women, and the elderly. Can you tell us more about this?

Prior to ordination in the Church of England, I worked in prison management and the education sector: teaching, lecturing and social work. My vocation to ordained ministry became more transparent during my work with prisoners and young offenders. I was a Christian and thought that I was carrying the light of Christ into a dark place (which I was), but I actually felt that they were showing me some qualities about the character of Christ. I also felt that God was using this opportunity to mould and build me for full-time ministry, which I did not know about at the time.

In terms of full-time ministry, I was a minister in areas which were considered to be socially deprived areas.

In the parishes where I served, I came across many broken people who had lost all hope in life.

As I listened to their stories, I developed such a heart of compassion for them. A great part of my ministry was listening to, praying for them and sharing a meal/coffee with them. I began to seek the Lord about what I could do to help to meet the needs of these homeless people, women, lonely and elderly people, etc.

When the Lord spoke to me and instructed me to start a luncheon club for homeless people, I was extremely reluctant and diffident. He gave me the Scripture reading ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’ (Proverbs 3:5).

On the authority in his word, I started a luncheon club for the homeless, followed by a women’s ministry and a coffee, tea and singing group for the elderly. I felt that on the outset of my ministry, I had a vocation to the poor, hungry and marginalised members of my parish. The ministries flourished and it filled me with joy to see God’s will, not mine, be done in the lives of his people. Today, I still have a heart for the poor and broken hearted. It’s a great reminder that Christ died for all of us irrespective of our status, culture or social class background. His love is freely given and freely received.

I have ministered in the UK where I trained for ordained ministry. More recently I have also ministered in the Caribbean. I have to confess that wherever I go in the world, I see that God’s mercies are new every morning and great is his faithfulness.

How can we pray for you?

I would like prayer for me to continue to serve the Lord until he says ‘well done my good and faithful servant’.

Pray for my family and loved ones that they too will serve the Lord; he will meet them at their point of need.

Pray for guidance by his Holy Spirit in the work that we do at CMS.

Pray for grace and resilience for all the students and staff at CMS and their loved ones.

Pray that the Lord will meet us all at our point of need this year and we will be filled with his joy and peace.

HH: Ruwani, you have just finished a three-year MA, what originally led you to study at CMS?

RG: After studying for my ordination, I had a desire to go deeper into theology. During the time I was completing my discernment and training, I happened to meet Jonny Baker at a virtual event. I was privileged to have a one-to-one conversation with him about something that I have been aware of right through my life – the clash of faith and culture. After listening to me, Jonny mentioned the Pioneering MA. I didn’t think I would be able to study at Masters level but with encouragement from friends I was grateful to gain a position on the course.

Can you tell us about your situation when you first came to us and how it is now?

As mentioned, I had just been ordained and started a curacy in the Diocese of London. I am a self-supporting minister and work for the diocese during the week. Studying, doing a curacy and working Monday to Friday meant I had a very busy three years. I always wanted to relate theological study to church life, and the curacy gave me plenty of opportunity to reflect and make connections with theory and praxis.

After three years in one parish, I am now in a different tradition and continue with my work in the diocese. I cherish the different traditions that the Anglican church holds together which is one of the most attractive things about this denomination.

Can you tell us about your cohort, and what the course has given you that helped you?

My cohort was the best! We had a few of us leave after the first and second year and some of us continued to the end. But even the friends who left stayed in touch with us on our WhatsApp group and encouraged and cheered us on whilst we were writing essays and our dissertations. The group chat allowed us to ask questions we did not want to trouble our tutors with and was a great way to keep morale up during pressured times of writing.

The course has given me so much for understanding my context in life and ministry. The reading lists were amazing, and to be connected to a historic organisation such as CMS which has connections to my birth country was very special.

I know you have said you looked at your context in a way that honours God, and I wonder if you can say more about that.

Well, having been raised in the Anglican Communion in Sri Lanka during my formational years and now living in the UK for most of my adult life brings about various cultural conflicts that unless you have encountered this mixture, one will find difficult to understand.

I like to ask the question why we do what we do? And sometimes my Sri Lankan upbringing and cultural practices do not give me the answers which I feel to be God honouring, let alone the freedom to ask the question! Equally, some Western Christian ways of seeing things raised questions in my mind. So, I try to ask the question in what way can I honour God when faced with conflicting situations?

For example, going through a divorce and asking the question how can I honour God in this mess? Honouring the years of marriage there were at the time of parting and doing it as well as I could in a way that we honour the family situation and not fight tooth and nail, was seen as foolish by some. For me this allowed space for my kids to grow up in a less contentious environment.

I know you have had reconciliation training, and your dissertation looked at worship as reconciliation. Can you say more about that, please?

My formational years were spent worshipping with Western hymnody. As a young person growing up in the City and worshipping in the original Anglican Cathedral in Colombo as a second-generation kid of post-colonial parents, this was normal. After arriving in the church in the UK and experiencing cultural differences, a myriad of questions arose in me about cultural expressions and faith. I strongly believe in reconciliation that is offered to us through the Eucharist as a gathered people of God. I feel the negative aspects of colonialism can never be repaid by material means. The imago deo of the persons affected can only be reconciled through the act of worship that touches the souls of all involved and the willingness of the Western church to be uncomfortable with new worship traditions and styles which adds value to another culture.

I am particularly interested in the region of South Asia where there is rich Indian classical heritage of the arts. I explored the use of Satsang style worship as a means of reconciliation in the Western church. People in that part of the world have sung English hymnody for centuries now, so why not give some space for the beauty of the Asian classical genre to come to the fore in the Western world and honour that culture. Embracing another cultural expression is missional reconciliation. We worship the Lord of the Nations and right now it does not feel that way.

We can despair when we look at the world around us which is increasingly polarised due to race, caste, creed etc. If we believe that we worship God the Creator of the universe, we have the gift of worship which can be the antithesis to shift culture around us.

Can you tell us about the Transforming Shame network, and how this works, please?

I was curious when I was introduced to this group during the pandemic and have remained closely attached to the core team since. The team consists of published authors on shame. Over the years I have come to understand that I have suffered acute shaming in my life which is partly cultural.

One significant issue has been being left out of family weddings because I am considered a disgrace being divorced. You might say this is archaic in the 21st century, but the communal shaming I have faced has been very damaging to me and my family unit to say the least. I want to shine a light on this dark side of culture.

The Transforming Shame network gives a safe space for anyone to address issues of shaming they have experienced and learn from each other. It is not a place for counselling or therapy but a space for knowing you are not on your own.

When diaspora cultures which are ‘shame and honour’ cultures gather in a mono-cultural setting, such traits tend to continue and become more pronounced. Once again, I go back to the heart of worship, that if we can be accepted with our cultural goodness among the wider Christian family, harm can be mitigated on both sides. I speak with personal experience of seeing the goodness of a multicultural church family in this country standing by me and my children as I raised them on my own. They covered my shame. You can read a blog on shame here.

Finally, how can we pray for you?

Please pray that I will be able to see Asian Christian worship flourish in the West in my lifetime.

Thank you Ruwani for sharing with us in such a deep and personal way.

HH: How did you first hear about CMS and what led you to want to study with us?

SD: I came to know about CMS early in 2021, following an intensive internet search of places to study where I could learn the foundations of Christianity, surrounded by love, without judgment of my immaturity in Christ.

What led me to CMS was a night that changed my life forever while living on the Isle of Wight. I encountered Jesus in a very physical way, was held in his embrace, filled with peace, love and hope at a time that felt far from peaceful.

His loving words wiped away years of tears and from that moment I have been fiercely chasing him, to grow in knowledge, wisdom and discernment. To understand the truth and fulfil his will for my life.

CMS was the only place I felt drawn to, I could think of nothing else. At that time, I had no idea that I would be living just 20 minutes up the road within a year of my Jesus encounter. All praise be to God.

After a year of waiting, you got onto the course and how did you find it?

I remember being so uplifted and excited by all the teaching at CMS, I particularly enjoyed the fellowship and learning. The other students provided valuable insights and experiences which were equally as inspiring as the tutors. I felt a sense of belonging, an acceptance as we not only studied and worshipped but navigated life together.

Lunchtimes were just as informative as the lectures, as the tutors came along side us and lavished us with such a wealth of knowledge and care. I felt part of something, I was gaining insight, I was learning so many new things; I felt close to God and I just wanted more.

In your own words, please do tell us what you can about your difficult situation and how God brought you through it?

Unfortunately, I was unable to continue my studies with CMS due to the increasing care needs of my son. He is autistic, he faced many challenges across his teenage years which led to a mental health breakdown.

I not only had to give up studying at CMS, but also my job as an outreach worker and my voluntary youth work role. In fact, all aspects of my life, including church and fellowship came to a grinding halt and were replaced with 24/7 watchful care for my son.

The trials came thick and fast, my prayers and faith never faulted. Breakthrough came and my son was restored. Hallelujah, my faith deepened, my love for Jesus surpassing all explanation.

Just as I was thinking of returning to life, from nowhere I was hit with illness. I experienced debilitating symptoms, unable to function. After many tests and investigations, I was diagnosed with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, a serious neurological condition defined as an abnormal increase of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain which can cause blindness among other things.

On the days that I could only lay down, I stayed in prayer and read the word. On the days that I could not open my eyes to read; I listened to the word through audible and the Bible app. On the days that I had no strength to follow a worship song; I sang from the spirit instead. Every day, in every way I honoured God, I called out to Jesus, I glorified him and gave thanks for the time that I had to build a relationship with him. The kind of relationship I had prayed for so fervently on the day I accepted him as my Lord and saviour.

Through it all, I stand on his word, I put my trust and faith in him and know my illness will be defeated as his word tells me so.

Your faith is so amazing and you have been through such tough times. Thank you for sharing that. I also know, you have done amazing work in your community, can you share some of the highlights?

I have been incredibly blessed with the community work I have done throughout my life, and incredibly privileged to have touched the lives of so many.

More recently I worked in Berinsfield to create outreach opportunities for the village. I ran weekly craft sessions, lawn games, multi-cultural groups, computer drop ins and one-to-one support. Working in partnership with other organisations to provide a community larder, food parcels, debt advice, citizens advice, healthy living and so much more. The community garden that we created there is still thriving and a valuable source of food and education to all.

The youth work has been a particular highlight over the years, especially working with disadvantaged youth, climbing mountains, delivering music events, residentials to Wales and Kenya. All designed for them to overcome personal struggles through challenge and adventure, building confident, stable individuals.

That’s a truly encouraging testimony! I know you’re in a period of waiting to see what God has for you, can you share about that and how you manage the ‘waiting game’?

Now, my health condition is under control my prayers are less focused on healing and more focused on God’s will for my life. I have a vision that is slowly being revealed, and, in the meantime, I do what I know my Father’s will is; to go out and preach the gospel, to give to the poor. To heal the sick and set the captives free. It is our great commission, therefore, instead of feeling like a failure, without purpose, I share God’s word daily, via text, written cards or in conversation.

I love like Jesus, meaning I recognise everyone, no matter their circumstances, as precious children of God and offer support, which could be a food parcel, a lift, encouragement to come to church or an act of kindness in another way.

I spend time in daily worship, prayer, praying for those in need and Bible studies. I attend church and fellowship meals. I surround myself with people that are full of the fruits of the Spirit and encourage one another.

This allows me to have joy in the waiting and deepen my relationship with God. I give my life daily to God and ask for his will to be done, and most importantly I trust in him, for he knows the plans he has for me.

How can we pray for you?

Thank you, I truly believe in the power of prayer so my prayer would be for God’s will to be done over my life, for a heart of my Father and that he would restore the years that the locusts have taken, for complete healing and alignment with the word of God. I pray for doors to be opened and financial stability.

HH: Libby, this is your second time of study with us, which is a great compliment that you came back for more! Can you tell us about your first time of undergraduate study with us?

LH-S: I took the Foundation Diploma in Mission, Ministry and Evangelism, at CMS, from 2014 to 2017, where the focus of my study was on pioneer ministry and Asian Christianity. Having grown up in Singapore and Laos, a lot of my worldview and experience has been influenced by my time spent in those two countries, so when reflecting on my own personal beliefs and values, I often defer to my Asian experience. I also learnt a lot about listening out for the still, small voice of God, and seeking after where he was calling me to minister specifically, using the talents and wisdom that he had given me, and not worrying about trying to emulate anyone else. God has created us all uniquely for a reason!

Since you left us the first time, you’ve been working in the Didcot area on a new housing estate. Can you tell us all about your work?

I was the Lead Community Chaplain for a mission and outreach initiative that Wantage and Abingdon Methodist Circuit set up in 2017. This largely involved being the chaplain to a wide range of places, subgroups, and organisations, including shop chaplaincy, street chaplaincy, school chaplaincy, care home and Anna Chaplaincy (chaplaincy with those in their Third and Fourth Ages, as defined by Laslett, 1987). It also included chaplaincy in Scouting, Guiding, Boys Brigade, and with International Welcome (an initiative, originally overseen by CCOW, to support vulnerable migrants in Didcot), as well as being the chaplain to two food banks, and a number of lunch initiatives. This also led me to setting up similar initiatives in Oxford. Unfortunately, funding is always tight, and both my chaplaincy roles in the Oxford Methodist Circuit, and Wantage and Abingdon Methodist Circuit have come/ are coming to an end.

It was an exciting initiative, and an honour to be part of. At one point, I was regularly seeing hundreds of people a week to listen to their stories, provide support of a practical and pastoral nature, to champion their causes, and to be a voice for those who were overlooked and ostracised. Many of them would struggle to ever come to church, but would frequently engage in prayer, Bible study, and sharing of life together with me, and others I brought into the team, in other spaces (usually a community hall or pub) where they felt more comfortable.

What led you to come back and study with us on the MA with an Asian Christianity focus?

I’ve long thought about doing a MA in a theological field, but always held back in case God was calling me into ordained ministry, in which case pursuing an MA would be part of the training. Over time, I came to realise that God was distinctly calling me to be a (lay) Local Preacher (a role which is very similar to Ordained Local Ministry, but with key differences) in the Methodist Church, which freed me up to be able to pursue this further study now. Having grown up in Asia, I am aware that a lot of my beliefs and values are very ‘Asian’ in their orientation, and I’m hoping that the MA will enable me to better understand people in Oxfordshire, where I’m based, who were born and raised in more Anglo-Saxon communities in Britain. I’m also finding that the course is helping me to fill in gaps in my knowledge about the ‘Asian Christianity’ story.

How are you finding the study so far?

Really interesting. There’s a lot to read, questions to consider, and I’m really enjoying being able to come into CMS and interact with students on other courses. The pioneer learning hub at CMS is known to be a ‘power house’ of activity, reflection, and learning, and it’s great being able to connect with that sharing of stories again.

You’ve done so much, Libby, what sustains you in your work?

I have a well-developed rhythm of life, which I find extremely helpful. On a daily basis, I spend time in reading and reflection, sharing stories with others from all different walks of life, and immersing myself in nature when I take my two greyhounds out for their evening walk. One of them loves to meander, pausing to sniff the scents around him, to watch intently for signs of wildlife, and to greet any other animals he sees on his path, which helps me to be more mindful, reflective, and to pause.

Every month, I lead a kind of Fresh Expression initiative that revolves around sighthounds, and sharing stories, and occasional prayers or bigger theological questions. Sighthounds are salukis, greyhounds, whippets, Italian greyhounds… We’re a walking and talking group. We also have occasional visits to churches with our dogs. And I visit my spiritual director – a retired Anglican priest who grew up in India.

Every year, I go on a week-long retreat to the forest, and take time to travel the world and see what God is doing in different places. My friends and family are also hugely supportive when I have a bad day (like we all get) and in helping me to stay rooted when life gets busy.

That all sounds amazing, Libby. How can we pray for you?

Firstly, prayers for peace as I start the writing part of the MA study. I have a tendency to internalise a lot, and occasionally struggle to get thoughts down on paper, so I’m currently feeling a bit anxious about the 6,000 words I have to write by the start of 2026. Secondly, for discernment as I look to God for where he may be inviting me to minister next as my chaplaincy role in my current circuit winds up.

Matthew, please tell us how you came to be part of the Southwest Hub course.*

I really felt that God was calling me to make a difference and I had been praying for some time for that opportunity.

I have always felt deeply connected with nature, and having four children who love being outside and are fascinated by nature has opened my eyes to what damage we have done to our world over time.

Towards the end of last year, I began exploring the possibility that God might be calling me into a deeper relationship beyond the day-to-day work life balance and it was at that point I came across the South West Pioneers course which looked really interesting and challenging.

I must have read about the course up to 10 times before finally believing this could actually be what God was calling me towards. I emailed the hub leader to enquire and very quickly heard back.

From that moment on, and the subsequent discernment conversations and feedback, I knew this was what the spirit had been calling me towards.

Matthew, can you tell me a bit about your work in the food industry?

I have been lucky enough to work in the food industry for the last 20 years; working for some amazing organisations and learning from incredible people.

On this journey I have worked for brands that not only deliver amazing products but are closely connected with nature and have given me a real sense of the impact the food industry has on our world.

I have always worked in commercial marketing and been focused on delivering consumer insights and solutions that add value. I am continually learning and always wanting to make a difference which gives me a real sense of purpose to what I do.

What is great is being able to see how positive changes we make now can improve the future whether that be on animal welfare, the environmental, health and nutrition, or the local community.

I know you have an interest in organic farming and the benefit it can bring to our precious environment. You told me module 4 – ‘Pioneering in the Rural Church’ – was based on an organic farm in Somerset. Please tell us more.

The module was based on Pitney Farm in Somerset, a beautiful, organic farm in a quiet location. As a farm they are self-sufficient and utilise each part the land; and even have their own shop and cafe serving delicious food.

Being in a rural location and at one with the elements was fascinating. One of the highlights was hearing how there had been very little rain for months and how reliant we are on God for our provision. We prayed into this and very shortly after, the heavens opened giving some relief to the land. It felt like prayer being answered.

While there we walked bare footed on the soil, stood silently and observed, listened to nature and connected, and praised God for how lucky we are to enjoy his precious resources.

What I particularly enjoyed was hearing the passion for organic farming methods, how it benefits the soil health, and how connected farmers are with their land, animals, and the seasons. It was very inspiring to hear in a world in which we are very disconnected from our food.

Can you talk more about your thoughts and ideas around creation and how you relate this to various Bible passages?

If you spend even a small amount of time trying to make sense of creation, I think there can be no doubt that this world has a creator.

God’s magic is all around us for us to see and experience. From the morning bird song, the spider weaving its web, the colours of the leaves on the trees, the rainbow in the sky, the wind blowing on your face… I could go on. The intricacies of creation and its design are beyond what our human brains can imagine or explain.

I take Jesus’ advice from Matthew 18:2–4, where we are told to become like little children. With this approach I find it transforms your thinking and you believe even though you can’t see or use human reason to explain creation.

In Genesis 2:15 God commands Adam to work and take care of creation. We are stewards entrusted to take care of the earth. Sadly, over time we have failed to live up to this command and are now faced with famine, poor harvests, pollution, climate change and food insecurity.

There is no time to lose, we need to make a difference and we can through the choices we make. Organic farming offers a solution to not only eat naturally, but to care for our environment and encourage biodiversity.

With just 3 per cent of the UK’s agricultural land organic there is a real opportunity for change and to restore the land to its natural, God given state. With my role in the food industry, I hope I can play a part in making a positive difference.

Can you tell us more about what’s happened since module 4, your work with organic eggs and how you have implemented things learnt in the module?

Since the module I have been able to have multiple conversations regarding organic eggs both internally and externally. They are the most natural type of eggs, the hens enjoy the highest welfare, and the farms have higher biodiversity due to not using pesticides. All three of these things are important to egg consumers, particularly the younger generation who are driving a lot of growth in the egg market.

In my role I have the opportunity to influence the direction of travel of the category and with a rising demand for natural, health foods, that have lower impact on the environment I have transferred my passion for organic food and the environment with what I learnt and felt at Pitney Farm into action. While I can’t see or share any visible results yet I am praying God will lead me and his will to be done.

That all sounds amazing. How can we pray for you, Matthew?

Please can you pray that God can use me to make a difference: that my experience, knowledge, and passion will rub off on others, I will continue to learn, and that God will continue to lead me, and present opportunities I can handle with wisdom and grace.

HH: Can you tell us a bit about your context and where you are based?

JD: I am based in the Parish of Maybush, Southampton and we are a large parish of 26,500 people. We are very close to Southampton Docks, the second largest container terminal in the UK.

The parish of Maybush incorporates a large urban estate with a population of 26,000 people, originally built to house those moving out of the city centre after Southampton had been extensively bombed during the Blitz. This area has significant levels of deprivation, where issues associated with poverty are common – including child poverty, social housing, single parent households and single occupancy households.

The parish has the lowest attendance per capita in the diocese (as of 2019).

“I have always had an interest in mission and those outside of the church walls and at the edges of society. It’s where I feel most comfortable.”

Since lockdown the church community have been seeking to address issues in the local community. We are currently running Marketplace on a Wednesday to help alleviate food poverty in the area. Out of this we now have social prescribers coming along, to assist in signposting to doctors and dentists. We have also begun a conversation with Mountbatten Hospice, talking about issues surrounding death and dying.

We are building relationships throughout the local community including statutory and local organisations. For us this has meant going out of the buildings to meet people where they are and invite the community into our churches and halls.

This has caused us to rethink how we are as a church community. We have started activities which serve God by creating safe spaces in our buildings.

You are studying the Pioneer MA with us. Can you tell us what led you to join the course?

As part of my ordination journey, I was recommended this course by the Bishop of Winchester (Philip Mounstephen, former CEO of CMS). I came for an open day in February 2025 with my vicar and it all seemed to fall into place. When I had completed my stage 2 panel I was recommended for further training with CMS.

I have always had an interest in mission and for those outside of the church walls and at the edges of society. It’s where I feel most comfortable.

I feel as though I am on the inside looking out at the things I think we should be doing and making a difference to those I meet.

“I know I am called to the margins of society. I am also not comfortable with the church doing the same thing.”

For many years I have struggled with church and how I fit in and a feeling of how we accept others into a church community who won’t come through the church doors on a Sunday. Being here I am sure will help me to define what that looks like for me going forward.

When you first joined us, your application said “This is part of my discernment process towards ordained ministry. I need a better understanding of what it means to be a pioneer and what that looks like for me in reality, within the context of people I meet.” It’s early days but can you say how that is shaping up, please?

I am beginning my journey with you at CMS (only a few weeks in) and getting an understanding of what a pioneer is. To be honest this is the beginning for me now so I want to be open-minded as to what this may look like.

I am aware that the term pioneer means different things for different people. I know I am called to the margins of society, however we understand that term.

I am also not comfortable with the church doing the same thing. God does not call us to comfortable Christianity, he calls us to make a difference.

HH: You also told me when Jesus preached his sermons, he didn’t just sit there … “and everyone just agree with him, say, very nice… I try and have a more discussion style of preaching, where people feel comfortable to ask me questions… I’ve been trying it out for a few years now.” Can you tell me more?

This began many years ago when I was a student in Bible College. I was given the chance once a month on a Sunday evening to try out preaching in different forms. The form of preaching I have stuck with – and try out when a passage leads to it – is to try and have a discussion. I use it as a way of checking if people understand what I am saying to them.

I’m not comfortable with “preachers” sharing the word and that is it. I read the gospels and the sermons of Jesus and I think there would have been discussion and dialogue.

For many years I have heard sermons and thought to myself, what does that actually mean? And how does this affect me when I am back in the workplace the next day? How does this relate to those I meet outside the church doors?

It made me think more about sermon prep, keep it simple, and leave room for conversation. There will be people in the room listening to your understanding of the passage and have a very different understanding. There is always collective wisdom in a room. I don’t have all the answers.

Thank you. How can we pray for you, Jez?

Pray for my church in Maybush as we work out together what God is wanting from me as we move forward.

As I enter study again after 20 years of not studying, I ask that I will be able to get to grips with the course, find a good pattern for study as I also have to work full time also (like many others).

Pray for my family as we adjust to the new routine of family life and how we now balance this all and work it out what it looks like in reality.

HH: Samantha, can you tell us about your context where you work and live?

SM: I serve as vicar of Alderney, the northernmost of the Channel Islands. It’s a small, close-knit community of around two thousand people – which during Alderney week and around August swells to double that!

We are unique and picturesque with a rich and sometimes painful history. Life here can be beautiful, but also quite isolated, with challenges around food insecurity, poverty, and limited resources.

The church sits right at the heart of island life, not only as a historic building but as a living presence. My role is to hold together the deep sacramental rhythms of the church with the very real needs of everyday life in a rural, island context.

I know you want “the richness of the sacramental life accessible and meaningful for all, not just the few.” And you told me, “For me, pioneering, mission, and study are all about holding together tradition and transformation.” Can you explain more about that? Especially as the vicar of Alderney, drawing deeply from your Anglo-Catholic roots and recognising the need to reimagine how to do church in a small, rural island context?

My Anglo-Catholic roots mean that the sacraments, beauty, and depth of worship are central to who I am as a priest. But for me, that isn’t something to be locked inside the sanctuary. Tradition is the anchor, but transformation is the sail.

To truly embody the gospel, we have to find ways of making the life of the church accessible and meaningful for those who may never walk through the door on a Sunday morning.

On Alderney, that means taking the richness of worship and community life and reimagining it in ways that resonate with island culture – whether that’s through cafe-style gatherings, puppets and praise, outdoor services, or community projects like our new initiative, Ground in Grace.

You told me mission here has to be “…deeply relational and responsive – shaped by the real needs of the community, from isolation to food insecurity.” Can you tell us more about that?

Yes. Mission here isn’t about programmes or numbers; it’s about people.

Many on Alderney experience loneliness, especially in the winter months. Others struggle with the high cost of living and limited access to food.

So, mission must begin with listening – listening to people’s lives, their struggles, their hopes.

Out of that listening, the church can respond with compassion and creativity.

Sometimes that looks like worship, sometimes like pastoral care or spiritual care such as Anna Chaplaincy and sometimes like practical support. It all belongs together.

How does pioneering mean being willing to step beyond the building, into gardens, community spaces, and partnerships?

Ground in Grace is our new pioneering project. It’s part forest church, part community allotment, part gathering place. We’ve started with chickens, a growing space, and plans for shared meals.

It’s church – but in a form that meets people in everyday life. It blurs the lines between sacred and ordinary space, showing that God is at work in the soil, around the table, and in community.

Pioneering means taking risks, stepping outside familiar structures, and working in partnership with others – schools, local government, voluntary groups – so that faith is lived out in tangible, hospitable ways.

You’ve said studying with us keeps you “grounded and growing – constantly listening to God, scripture, and context so I can respond with integrity and imagination”. Can you tell us more?

Studying has been a gift – it keeps me rooted in scripture and tradition, but also constantly stretched by new perspectives. It gives me time to reflect, rather than just react, and that means I can serve with integrity.

Most of all, study keeps me hopeful. It reminds me that God is always doing a new thing, that transformation is possible, and that the church’s future – even in small and fragile contexts – can be full of life.

Samantha, how can we pray for you?

Please pray for resilience and joy – for wisdom to serve faithfully, and for the courage to keep stepping into new places of mission.

Pray for Alderney, that this island may flourish in spirit, community, and care.

And pray for our church, that we may be both deeply rooted in Christ and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit.

HH: Hi, Rebecca, can you tell me about your context? And whether your previous education has prepared you for the challenges?

RE: My current role is Ministry Development and Inclusion Officer within Truro Diocese, which covers a whole variety of pieces of work.

What I find most fulfilling is working with parishes and their unique contexts. I’ve worked for the diocese for 14 years this year and so I believe I have a good grounding in understanding the nature of parishes within the diocese, many of which are deeply rural.

My previous education and vocational experiences have equipped me very well to work with people and to help diverse groups find common ground. For 18 months I worked for a small charity and studied community development at the same time. It has been valuable to share this learning with many of the parishes I work with. I think an Asset Based Community Development approach can not only provide direction to parishes but also help them to work jointly with their communities.

I understand that last year you launched a podcast which explores ministry and theological issues. Can you tell me any of the interesting things you are discovering related to this?

Launching the podcast ended up being a bit of diving in at the deep end, in that I’m not a particularly techy person but thought it would be great to give people a bitesize insight into a particular topic, to think about whether it was something they’d like to explore further.

So, for the first one, I came across Jo on Twitter (X) who was studying for a PhD in trauma-informed theology. It sounded fascinating, so I reached out to her, and she was happy to give it a go. We had a conversation about possible questions and then one evening just recorded our conversation on Zoom. It felt very natural just talking and listening to what she had to say.

We put it out a couple of months later and had some great comments about how informative it was. So, I started to explore doing some others. To begin with, I was a bit nervous about subjects that I didn’t know much about, like AI for instance, but I have found that gave me an opportunity to ask the questions that might seem obvious but provided listeners with a basic understanding.

One of my favourite ones has been interviewing Professor Susannah Cornwall on Trans theology. She was so incredibly knowledgeable but able to present in an accessible way and we were able to explore some of the things that we might have learnt biases against.

I know you are supporting parishes through transition, also called vacancy or interregnum, writing the parish profiles etc. Our church is going through this time now. Have you any insights on how churches can work well through this period of change?

Yes, I love working with parishes on this. I think the temptation can often be to rush the process because every parish wants a new vicar as soon as possible! However, by taking a bit longer and spending time studying scripture together the discernment process itself can often help the parish(es) to grow in confidence. Many of our roles are for Oversight Ministers so helping the parishes to work together in this time is part of preparing the ground for someone to be appointed.

I think there is also a danger of trying to show the parish in the best possible light, that everything is sorted. I try to encourage a deep sense of honesty in the profile so that it highlights the challenges or where they are struggling. Having spent time speaking to clergy about what they look for in a profile they have often said they’re looking to see if their skills can make a difference. In this sense, a parish having recognised the gaps means there can be a shared sense of vision or need moving forward.

One of the important alignments is appointing a priest of the same church tradition as the parishes – whilst there may be some diversity across parishes in an oversight role there are often similarities that they can agree upon. As part of the profile, I ask the representatives to write a bit about the church – but to focus mainly on what it is like to worship there rather than the details of the building. This helps to underline that the discernment is a two-way process, both for the parish and the clergy.

Please can you also tell me about the newly established EDIJ Board looking at how your diocese values all people and caters for different needs. Have you discovered any especially pertinent information for the church as a whole?

The Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ) Board took some time to establish and there were lots of conversations about who should chair it. We needed someone with enough knowledge of the complex structure of the Church of England as well as being able to bring challenge. It is still newly established, but we have had some great conversations about how to value diversity and the difficulty of doing so well when people hold such different views.

A key area that we have focused in on is how we make the work integral to all that we do, rather than an add-on. I think this is pertinent for the whole church because otherwise there is a risk that it becomes something we think about for a season without bringing transformative change.

To achieve this, we need to find ways of making it part of existing structures and decision making. For example, in the transition process, as well as requiring parish representatives to do Safer Recruitment training, we also now require them to do a Shortlisting and Interview Good Practice workshop which explores diversity in the Bible, the people that God chose, alongside an opportunity for honest discussion about unconscious bias.

Your location is Cornwall, I am sure it has some unique delights and unique challenges. Can you say more about that? And Transformation Cornwall?

I live in Cornwall which is a beautiful county with rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, and expansive moorland. The Diocese of Truro covers Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and two parishes in Devon.

I’m sure there are unique elements to every diocese and one of ours is that many of our parishes are deeply rural (some will literally have more sheep than people). A specific challenge in that is to explore how churches are fruitful and sustainable in that context. This includes being intentional about valuing the small things. Our Diocesan Secretary speaks of a satsuma not being a failed orange.

Many of our churches may be struggling in terms of attendance numbers on a Sunday but their ministry is as a rhythm of the rural communities in which they are located.

The BBC programme Cornwall with Simon Reeve provided viewers with an insight into Cornwall that is very different from the idyllic holiday destination often portrayed. The programme exposed the extent of hidden poverty and how it touches on so many areas of life. Many of our communities and churches are pioneering in the way they tackle this, which is an essential part of their mission and evangelism.

Transformation Cornwall is a charity that was originally funded mainly by Church Urban Fund. I’ve worked with them very closely since I joined the Diocese in 2011. In 2012 we jointly hosted the first Meet the Funders event that was aimed at bringing together those of all faiths and none to help with funding for community projects. The programme has changed over time, but we still host a yearly spring event which brings together national and local funders with grassroots projects.

Please tell us what led you to study at CMS and how you have found it?

Last year I thought that it would be a good point to do some further study. My youngest child had finished his first year at school and I felt like I had a bit more space and was hungry for learning. I was keen to explore opportunities that would provide me with deeper theological knowledge to help me with some of the challenges I face when working with diverse parishes.

I’m currently studying for a Certificate in Theology with an African Christianity Focus. It has been a learning curve to get back into the rhythm of writing essays (and referencing!) but the course has been enlightening in so many ways.

It has helped me to underpin some of the outreach and facilitation work I do, to bring new and fresh ideas to it and I’ve loved the discussions which take place in the lessons as well as meeting lots of new people.

You are halfway through your first year with us, what have been some highlights?

I’ve very much valued the discussions we’ve had during the sessions and the support that is provided by both CMS and other students. I’m finding it difficult to think of one or two highlights because the whole experience is so valuable.

I have immersed myself in so many books about the different topics we’ve been studying but I suppose having the space to make those connections to how I can apply that to my role has been the most transformative element.

The sessions are facilitated sensitively and safely so that there is opportunity for discussion but also space to listen and hear different perspectives and to disagree well when that is the outcome.

Two of my favourite books so far have been Christianity Rediscovered and Theology Brewed in an African Pot.

How can we pray for you?

I’m always moved by the prayer about letting go of what is not needed and taking time for rest. I think in my context that is something I need to be attentive to. It is very easy to try and hold onto everything and to be what everybody needs but having the grace to recognise the specific things that God is calling me to is harder. So I’d very much appreciate prayers for that discernment for now and the future.

HH: Thank you, Abi, for agreeing to be interviewed. Can I ask, what kinds of ministry or church work have you been involved in?

AC: Since September 2024, I’ve been doing a volunteer gap year with St Mary’s Bletchley (a self-described ‘Anglican-ish’ church in Milton Keynes that I’ve been connected with for many years) training for children’s and youth work. I’m only 18 (not that much older than some of those I work with), so have a lot to learn; and I am very grateful to be part of a church that is so passionate about reaching out to the community it’s in.

As part of this gap year, I’ve done a mixture of ministry areas:

discipleship – leading a youth Alpha course, running Bible study sessions, taking a group of young people to the welcome service for the new Bishop of Buckingham, leading kids’ church;

outreach – helping at the drop-in youth group, kids’ club, a parent and toddler group;

and seasonal events – the Light Party, school Christmas services, making pancakes with community families on Shrove Tuesday, Easter school assemblies.

At many of these community events, you’ll usually find me at a craft table showing people how to make things – I’m a very creative person and love to share my skills with others.

Although I work across groups that range from very church-based to groups with little to no church experience, I naturally seem to gravitate towards those without church backgrounds and to the edges of church.

How have you ended up on the course and in ministry?

It’s been a rollercoaster ride of God’s perfect timing.

I really didn’t expect to be doing this gap year, but early last year I sensed a call to get more involved in youth and children’s ministry and develop my leadership skills.

At the same time, I was finishing college and intending to progress onto an apprenticeship in September 2024, so I didn’t see how I could balance church ministry and work/study with my hectic schedule.

However, my apprenticeship offer fell through unexpectedly at short notice, and despite applying for several other places I simply couldn’t find a job.

Over the summer of 2024 I was offered the opportunity by my church to spend a year working with them across several of their children’s and youth ministries and completing some training alongside – this absolutely fitted with my calling and I had simply no reason to say no!

Getting onto this course also required God to move some obstacles – I had very little experience of youth and children’s work; there wasn’t much funding available from my church for the training; and my application was very last-minute. But an applicant to the Pioneer Youth Ministry course dropped out at short notice, leaving an empty funded place which I was able to take.

God’s plans for me are so much bigger than my own, and God has taken me to so many places that I never thought I would go in my faith journey. (In 2023 I didn’t think I would even be a member of this church, but that’s a whole other story…) I can’t wait to see where God will take me next!

Is the course helping you? If so, how and what has been most interesting to you?

Doing the Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission with a Pioneer Youth Ministry focus has broadened my horizons and shown me that there are many other people around the country who share my passion to do things differently and reach those who would never walk into a Sunday morning service. Both the study and the practical has been a very steep learning curve for me, since literally everything is new!

The most interesting thing was the residential visit to Lodge Road Community Church in a working-class area of Birmingham, where we got the opportunity to explore the community, see the impact the church is having, visit a local gurdwara, and be part of their service and community meal afterwards.

The level of love and welcome (to our group and to those in the community who would often be excluded, such as LGBTQIA+ people and adults with learning disabilities) was amazing. I left there planning how I can try to include more of that unconditional welcome in the groups I help run.

The assignments have been extremely useful, since they’re very context-focused and allowed me to reflect on how I can apply my learning to my work.

Could you provide any examples of where study has helped make sense of church or mission for you?

It’s helped me to realise that I don’t need to worry about getting the young people who go to the Bible study groups to come to church, since those groups are already church in their own right; made me re-examine my previous negative views of mission and evangelism; taught me about how to engage and involve young people in youth ministry; and given me more skills in caring pastorally for the young people I work with (I wasn’t even aware that what I do is pastoral care before I started that module).

It’s given me the language to describe my passions and goals – at the beginning of the course I wasn’t sure if I fitted into the category of a pioneer, but now I realise that my desires to push the boundaries of the established church, do things differently, and do ministry with the growing number of young people who don’t go to church is pioneering.

Is there anything else you think is important right now?

Something that has been very important for me during this year is paying attention and being adaptable.

There is literally no script or map to follow when working with such a wide range of people from 0 to 18 years old, situations change so quickly and within a session I play so many different roles.

Add that to the fact that youth and children’s work has changed so much over the past few years – with smartphones, Covid, social media and other things – and it means that much of the older guidance and books about this work are no longer relevant.

I simply have to be aware of what is going on, what God is doing in a situation, and change what I am doing to respond moment-by-moment.

What’s next in your pioneer journey?

I’m currently preparing for a short-term mission trip [at time of interview, the trip took place in May] with others from my church to Manila, Philippines, to spend 10 days volunteering with Streetlight, a charity my church supports that works with street children. I haven’t even been on a plane before, let alone go halfway around the world, so this is totally new for me!

Another thing on the horizon is an ambition to break the silence in my church around being LGBTQIA+. It simply isn’t talked about, there is no official position on the debate, and as far as I am aware there is no one in the congregation who is out and proud, which really isn’t helping some of the LGBTQIA+ youth as they question their identity and figure out their lives and faith.

I’ve already run some Bible study sessions with the youth group on this topic, but I want to get the whole church to notice and be involved. Just getting people aware of this via running something like an LLF course is something I would love to do.

As for what happens after my gap year, who knows! I definitely want to keep volunteering and getting involved in children’s and youth ministry, but I don’t know what role I’ll be doing or in what capacity.

How can we pray for you?

Pray that God gives me guidance for what to do after this gap year.

Pray that the mission trip would be fruitful for everyone involved.

Pray that I get more confidence in myself – I have a bad stutter, often feel like I need to prove myself to others, and doubt my ability to make change.

Finally, pray that everyone who comes to the community events, Alpha, Messy Church, the drop-in youth group, the youth week away in the summer, and the kids’ club would encounter something of God and want to find out more.

HH: Please tell us who you are and what drew you into pioneering in general?

SP: Like many in a rural setting, I’m someone who seems to wear many hats, but primarily, I’m a churchwarden at St Peter’s Church, Uplowman (mid Devon) and chair of governors for two beautiful primary schools, although I have also been an Anna Chaplain and a children and families worker in our mission community. I’m also hoping to start ordination training in September.

My ministry has taken me in many exciting directions but what is common to all roles I have undertaken is a calling to reach out to people in creative ways to share something of what it feels like to live a life with Christ at its centre.

Meeting people where they are on their faith journey: Stephanie Packham, poolside

This pioneering mindset has been further fuelled by an acknowledgement that, like many churches, attendance at our traditional church services was on the decline.

When our church reached the bottom of the bell curve, there was great sadness, but there was also a real sense of opportunity. For me, it felt like we were being given permission to reimagine church. It felt like I was being called to be more pioneering – I just needed the courage to give it a go.

How do you feel God is calling you within your community?

For a long time, I had a strong sense that we needed to map our context to truly understand what direction to take, so we put together a community survey and delivered it to every household in the village.

What came back was remarkable. So many ideas were shared that showed us spirituality is very much alive in our community. Many of the suggestions made were amazing pioneer ministry ideas.

As a result, I found the courage to set up my first pioneer ministry project – Aqua Bears and Prayers – and I am so glad that I did, as it has turned out to be a truly beautiful, spirit filled project.

The aim was to meet people where they are on their faith journey, in a place that felt comfortable, and in a way that suits their lifestyle. In this case, it was a swimming pool!

Aqua Bears and Prayers is a Christian-based swim project where pre-schoolers and their grown-ups join us for water play. They hear Bible stories, we pray together using floating (battery) candles, we sing songs and we share stories together.

Aqua Bears and Prayers video from CofE Devon

There is a pastoral side to the project too, as we love and support each other through life’s twists and turns. Pastoral support happens both in the pool and poolside, over a drink and biscuit.

Aqua Bears and Prayers has been a real blessing to our community and demonstrates how pioneer ministry can take many shapes and forms.

For me, I truly believe that if you start with your own gifts, whatever they may be (mine was swimming), and add in a generous heart, then with God’s guidance amazing things can happen.

I have also just completed a pioneering Net Zero Visions mural project with two schools. In this project, the children worked with a local artist to produce the most amazing large scale art work that was based on the question: “What would your village look like if it was Net Zero?”

The heart of the project was based on the fifth mark of mission – on our call to be good stewards of creation. The prayer is that the murals will get people talking about how they can make a difference to the climate emergency, and inspire people to act.

In a similar vein, I also held a Creation Hub within our Mission Community, where guest speakers and stall holders gathered with local people to discuss what we could do right here, in our very rural part of Devon, to address climate concerns. Being so rural, the environment is such an important part of life in our little community, and this project really seemed to meet a need identified in our community survey.

The final pioneer project I want to tell you about is Lifepath Tiverton. This is an annual, ecumenical schools project, where children from different schools come together to learn about faith through historical figures. In our case, it is the Wesley Family – what pioneers they were!

We take the children back to the 1700s and immerse them in drama, music and activity to help them understand how the choices we make in our lives affect our own Lifepath.  We have 300 children coming over three days in June.

How did you hear about the hub and, although I know it is early days, what has been your experience so far?

I heard about the hubs through Exeter Diocese newsletter (Roots and Shoots). It felt like a real answer to prayer, as I had been longing for a chance to be part of the pioneer ministry conversation, and for the diocese to offer support to people doing this kind of work. So, here I am, part of the first Exeter Diocese cohort to go through the CMS Certificate course.

So far, the course has been inspiring and deeply nourishing. I have met like-minded people, and I have enjoyed hearing their stories. There has been a wonderful mix of theological teaching, scripture and activity, delivered in a playful and accessible way. For me, I feel less lonely on my pioneer ministry journey, and for that, I am so very grateful.

What have been the highs of study with CMS in the Hub?

I have only attended one residential weekend so far, but this course is already helping me to find the right words to explain to others why pioneer ministry is so important. It is giving me a deeper theological understanding that is solidly based on scripture.

The suggested reading material is incredibly enriching, and the demonstration of learning exercise we were given was great. It is really helping me to embed what I have learnt within my own setting.

I also love the way that you are equipped with ideas to take back to your own community. There are so many people doing wonderful pioneering projects, it is truly inspirational to hear about them.

How can we pray for you?

Pray for the families joining Aqua Bears and Prayers for this year (we take a rest over the winter as it’s too difficult to keep the pool heated):

May they feel the love of God surrounding them as they enter the space.

May they feel comfortable to share their stories, and feel that it is a safe place to ask questions about faith.

May it be a positive, playful experience for those who come and hear more about you Lord, as we learn together how to love and enjoy how wonderful water is.

Please also pray for God’s guidance as I take the next step in my pioneer ministry journey. In a world of opportunities, may I know which way to turn.

May I be given the right words to say to others who want to understand more about this ministry.

May what I say and do help to soften hearts and minds of those who may be sceptical, and be an encouragement to those wondering whether they are being called to pioneer ministry.

Give me the courage to step forward in faith for the good of the Kingdom.
